BUSHNELL ENGAGE 1-4x24 German 4 riflescope

In 2018, BUSHNELL introduced three new product families grouped by price: FORGE as the premium segment, NITRO as the mid-range, and PRIME as the most economical. Separately, purely tactical optics are maintained in different, distinct lines. For this reason, we thought a reorganization of their references would occur and that some would disappear, as has been the case in some instances.

This has not happened with the ENGAGE family, which has even grown in models, taking advantage of internal synergies with the new ranges. The reason lies in the reputation the ENGAGE series has built among hunters and shooters in various latitudes as one of the best options for its price-quality ratio. Regarding the latter, it is positioned slightly below the NITRO family.

With a minimum magnification range of 1x, it provides a very good field of view (28m@1X-7.3m@4X), making it an ideal scope for driven hunts or battues due to its configuration. This type of scope with such a low magnification range was born in the late 90s for sporting use, but was quickly adopted for military and hunting purposes. They are ideal for activities that require engaging targets quickly in short-range to medium-range (400 m) situations, of course, with a high hit rate.

The first thing that draws attention is that it is a very well-finished optic, as one would expect from a BUSHNELL product. The characteristic robustness is evident, yet it has a moderate weight of 466 g. The 30 mm tube provides good structural rigidity and sufficient interior space for the erector tube. In scopes intended for hunting like this one, it is sometimes preferable to accept a few extra grams of weight in exchange for greater solidity. Regarding length, it is 285 mm.

As with the rest of the scopes from this North American brand, the interior is nitrogen-purged to prevent fogging due to mist or thermal shock. A bonus with this scope is that it comes standard with Butler Creek “flip-open” protective caps for the eyepiece and objective lens.

The optics are one of the great values of this scope and what has made it so well regarded by our community. The lens glass is extra-low dispersion, known as ED Prime, largely responsible for the clarity and sharpness of vision. Furthermore, Bushnell's HDOS (High Definition Optical System) combines several key technologies applied to various critical variables in a scope, such as lenses fully coated with proprietary treatments to offer an astonishing 95% light transmission across 300% more of the visual light spectrum. This perfect combination is achieved using the MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) test under different lighting conditions. The result is its lauded high performance in contrast, brightness, resolution, and color. The 50 mm objective of this reference also contributes to this.

Another emblematic treatment used is the Exo Barrier™, which ensures the image remains visible by keeping fog, water, dust, fingerprints, and general dirt off the lenses, so we never lose any detail of the images. It is a treatment applied last to the exterior of the eyepiece and objective, but it remains over time because it adheres molecularly to the lenses.

Its mechanics are metal and offer good precision, utilizing turrets that are protected by caps, which, while eminently for hunting, allow for adequate operation due to their good tactile feel. It is possible to zero them by loosening the two top Phillips screws on each with a screwdriver. The turrets are graduated in MILs, so each click represents a correction of 0.1 MILs, that is, a variation of 1 cm at 100 m.

The rest of the controls have a good feel; the magnification ring is fluid and prepared to receive a fast-throw lever. Laterally, we have the parallax control, accompanied by the reticle illumination, which in this case has six levels of brightness.

The reticle model for this reference is the illuminated German #4 in the second focal plane (SFP), a model especially valued by Spanish hunters and one that will surely make it one of the best sellers.
