New in 2019, the Freedom RDS is a game-changer when it comes to ruggedness and durability in a red dot sight. LEUPOLD, which has more than 70 years of experience in optics, has created a red dot that is rock-hard and comes at an amazing price. Below, we are going to take a closer look at the features of this Freedom RDS.
Built for shooters, hunters, and tactical operators alike, the Freedom RDS is available in two distinct models: one with turrets featuring ¼ MOA precision adjustments and the other with a BDC elevation turret with precision adjustments up to 500 yards for a standard .223 Rem cartridge with a 55-grain bullet (LEUPOLD Freedom RDS 1x34 1 MOA BDC sight).
Its main differentiating value compared to the competition is that it is designed to incorporate LEUPOLD's popular CDS (Custom Dial System); the BDC ballistic turret makes longer shots much easier to execute. Once you have zeroed your rifle, you can reset the turret and then make shot adjustments in meters instead of MOAs. Therefore, if your target is 500 meters away, simply turn the turret to position number 5 and aim at the target. This allows you to take short-range shots, typical of CQB (Close Quarter Battle) or those that might occur during a driven hunt, and then quickly dial to the 500-meter position for longer, more precise shots. All this without worrying about having to aim above the target to compensate for drop.
There is no problem installing the Freedom RDS on a rifle that uses other popular AR platform calibers, such as a 6.5 Creedmoor or .300 Blackout; the LEUPOLD custom shop can manufacture a new ballistic turret for you at the standard rate.
Unlike other red dots on the market, it has outstanding optical characteristics, maintains amazing color fidelity, superior lens clarity, and keeps the edges of the image crisp. LEUPOLD's Twilight Red Dot system helps you see more in less light and is specially designed to operate in twilight, which is when much game is within range.
For greater precision, it features a 1 MOA red dot. This is activated simply by pressing a button and provides a clear and precise system when aiming. This smaller dot is ideal for longer-distance shots, where a larger dot might cover too much of the target. As an added benefit, the RDS features LEUPOLD's Motion Sensor Technology (MST), which turns off the illumination after five minutes of inactivity. When the MST detects motion again, it instantly turns the illumination back on, so it's ready when you are. A manual mode also allows the sight to be turned off when not in use.
It is also possible to select between eight illumination settings, making the dot easily visible in low-light conditions or under the midday sun. In the RDS's medium brightness setting, it provides up to 1,000 hours of battery life, which, thanks to the aforementioned motion sensor technology, is practically 1,000 usable hours. The Freedom RDS is lightweight, compact, and ready for whatever purpose you have in mind. It features a 34mm objective and a main tube measuring just over five inches long (127 mm), plus it weighs just under 200g without the mount. To facilitate installation, it comes with a mount that sits at the optimal viewing height for AR-style rifles. That said, you can remove the provided mount and use any 34mm ring system in its place.
Like all LEUPOLD products designed to be mounted on a firearm, the Freedom RDS is designed, machined, and assembled in Beaverton, Oregon, and is built to withstand a lifetime of abuse. With scratch-resistant lenses and 100% fogproof and waterproof construction, the Freedom RDS is tested and verified on the "Punisher" in the harshest conditions, so it can handle the most ruthless use you are capable of giving it. The "Punisher" is a recoil simulation machine exclusive to LEUPOLD, which subjects each model to 5,000 impacts. Each impact has a force three times the recoil of a .308 Win caliber rifle.
The ultra-lightweight construction disperses recoil energy for class-leading durability, and since this sight is tested to the same demanding standards as military optics, you know it won't fail you. That said, if you ever have a problem, the Freedom RDS, like all products bearing the Gold Ring, is backed by LEUPOLD's legendary lifetime warranty.
Features:
- Motion Sensor Technology (MST). 1 MOA red dot with Motion Sensor Technology (MST). The MST system turns off the illumination after five minutes of inactivity and turns it back on upon the first detection of motion.
- Twilight Red Dot System. The Twilight Red Dot System helps you see more in less light, and also provides great color consistency and superior lens clarity.
- BDC Turret. Designed to work with LEUPOLD's popular CDS (Custom Dial System), the BDC elevation turret makes longer shots much easier. Once you have zeroed your rifle, you can reset the turret and then make shot adjustments in meters instead of MOAs. Therefore, if your target is 500 meters away, simply turn the turret to position 5 and aim at the target.
- AR-style mount. With a 34mm main tube, the Freedom RDS comes with a mount that sits at the optimal viewing height for AR-style rifles. That said, you can remove the provided mount and use any 34mm ring system in its place.
- Lifetime Guarantee. Designed to withstand a lifetime of hard use, the Freedom RDS features scratch-resistant lenses, 100% fogproof and waterproof construction. Plus, it has survived the "Punisher," meaning it is tested and verified to work in the harshest conditions.
