The Australian brand ZEROTECH, a recent arrival on the international market, arrives in Spain through BORCHERS, its exclusive importer. Although it was introduced in 2020, behind it is TSA Outdoors (Tasco Sales Australia), a company with over 50 years of experience in the optics industry. This importer and distributor partnered with several manufacturers and gave birth to ZeroTech, a company that uses its own engineers and researchers to develop Australian riflescopes adapted to Australian shooters.
This last detail is of special importance, which means it is a product capable of operating in a country characterized by its climatic extremes. A valuable aspect for marketing, because Australia is, after all, one of the harshest and most arid countries in the world. If a riflescope can cope with these environmental conditions, it can cope with almost anything. In fact, this is one of the brand's strengths.
The ZEROTECH THRIVE 3-9×40 DUPLEX model is a reference that, due to its characteristics, corresponds to a hunting scope made for stalking, but which, due to its good field of view at low magnification, can be used in driven hunts and battues in positions with long shots. Its magnification, turrets, and especially its second focal plane (SFP) reticle design are determining factors for this classification. The THRIVE series stands out within the ZEROTECH catalog for its extraordinary value for money.
As we have already noted, it is a robust scope; structurally, it is a one-piece 30 mm tube made of aircraft-grade aluminum. The finish is in the popular matte black typical of this type of scope. The use of O-rings and argon gas purging make it completely waterproof and fog-proof. In the hand, the THRIVE conveys solidity, although it is not excessively heavy at 540 g, and we can consider it almost compact, as its length is 322 mm.
Regarding the optics, this series uses quality glass, but it is not HD, which is used instead by the THRIVE HD series. The lenses are equipped with full coatings that ensure good light transmission. The images obtained are bright, sharp, and clear, with correct performance in low-light conditions. To preserve the lenses, those in contact with the exterior have a proprietary protective coating against scratches and abrasions, called "Weathershield." This is logical, as it is a scope designed to operate in a country as sandy and dusty as Australia.
The 3-9×40 magnification makes it a multi-purpose scope, since its innate vocation for stalking is complemented by its utility in driven hunts and battues due to its good field of view at low magnification. This makes it easy to locate the prey in the distance quickly, or in the case of a driven hunt or battue, to follow moving prey.
The scope has a quick-adjust diopter system. The eye relief, depending on the magnification, ranges from 88-97 mm, which ensures safe use with any caliber; furthermore, the range is wide enough to quickly acquire the target. Regarding the field of view at 100 m, it is 12.9 m at 3x and 4 m at 9x, good values for stalking, facilitating the location of the animal in the distance.
The turrets are typical hunting turrets equipped with safety caps. Zeroing is especially easy since all it takes is a coin to do it. As for their operation, they have a crisp and audible click, with the right balance between stiffness and sensitivity so they are fast and easy to handle. Graduated in MOAs, each click is 0.25 MOAs, which represents a variation of 7.27 mm at 100 m.
The maximum correction range for elevation is 60 MOAs, and for windage, it is also 60 MOAs. On the side opposite the latter turret is the parallax adjustment control, which is surprising for its starting point in its configuration, which is only 10 m to infinity. A feature that will be appreciated by those who use the scope with rimfire rifles.
This model uses a second focal plane (SFP) reticle called DUPLEX, with a hunting orientation featuring a crosshair and thick post design, a variant of the popular German #4, much favored by European hunters. Although the ZEROTECH brand points to the design of new reticles as one of its strengths, in this case, it uses a traditional model. This reference lacks illumination, but it has thick posts that allow for quick target acquisition.
It should also be mentioned that the scope is very well presented for what is expected in the price segment where it is positioned. In addition to a neoprene cover, it comes with a high-quality microfiber cloth and an instruction manual.
In summary, despite its youth, the ZEROTECH THRIVE 3-9×40 DUPLEX is a scope that is making a strong entry into the Spanish market for stalking hunting optics, with a certain versatility for driven hunts. In such a competitive market as the current one, its strengths are exceptional value for money, accompanied by foolproof robustness and several interesting technological innovations.
